Why is it a big deal for the President not to use the word 'Recession' and admit we are currently in one?

If the U.S. is in a recession, why can't our own president be bold, honest, and straightforward about the fact instead of playing mind games with the american people? What consequences may he fear that outweighs the honesty to admit and say to the american public that "our country has now fallen to recession"?
