BIOLOGY QUESTION???!!!!?

In prophase 1 of meiosis, the logous chromosomes align to form a tetrad. Why doesn't this happen in mitosis? I know that at SOME point, the logous chromosomes align closely with one another in mitosis...they have to, so that the genes code for certain traits, right? Somebody needs to explain it - 9th grade high-level biology cl.
