How do people really know what Virgin Mary looked like?

Actually, Jesus was genetically related to Mary, after all, she physically created him. If a person is Catholic they believe that some have actually seen Mary in person, and fairly recently too. But, when it comes to seeing Mary in toast, for instance, I guess it's up to the person viewing the toast whether or not it looks like Mary.
